Hooded Plovers

These small shorebirds are extremely endangered, classed as vulnerable to extinction. They like to nest on the sand and dunes close to surf beaches.

Their nest is really just a scrape in the sand and the eggs very well camouflaged. If you are lucky enough to see one of these small birds on the shoreline it

may well be leading you away from its nest and sitting partner. Their eggs take about 5 weeks to hatch. Please tread carefully !
